Hybrid heating solution enhances efficiency and control at Grantham Health Centre

Grantham Health Centre in Lincolnshire has taken a major step towards decarbonisation with the installation of a new hybrid heating system. Working alongside our long-term partners at Arthur Pollard Ltd, we delivered a hybrid heating solution that not only meets the centre’s immediate needs but also supports its long-term sustainability goals, all while minimising disruption to vital clinical services.

The previous system, comprising three aging gas boilers, had reached the end of its service life. With a need to maintain uninterrupted clinical services, the health centre sought a modern, energy-saving solution that could be installed with minimal disruption and within a strict budget and carbon reduction targets.

To address these needs, two Stratton mk3 wall-hung condensing boilers and a 50kW Tyneham 290HT air source heat pump were selected for their high performance, compact footprint, and compatibility with existing infrastructure, with a 500L buffer vessel with immersion heater, controlled via a Building Management System (BMS).

Thanks to the hybrid design, the heat pump provides primary heating in milder weather, while the gas boilers take over during colder months. This not only helps reduce running costs but also ensures continued use of the centre’s existing radiators and pipework, avoiding any invasive internal alterations.

Paul Jones, Regional Capital Project Lead - Midlands at NHSPS, said:

The recent heating upgrade at Grantham Health Centre exemplifies our commitment to sustainability and future-proofing our facilities. This project is a testament to our dedication to creating sustainable healthcare environments that are equipped to meet the evolving needs of our communities.

Installed over seven weeks while the health centre remained operational, the project was carefully managed to avoid disruption, with a temporary boiler in place and gas works carried out over a weekend.

Arthur Pollard Ltd.’s Oliver Foster praised the collaboration and support from Hamworthy:

The project progressed exceptionally smoothly, with the client expressing satisfaction with the new system. Early design input from Hamworthy helped streamline decision-making and minimise risk throughout.

Designed with future adaptability in mind, the system also allows for easy expansion should the centre’s needs grow. The upgrade provides a sustainable and robust heating solution that aligns with the evolving requirements of the healthcare sector.
